The Department of Human Biology, which is a vibrant multidisciplinary department in the Faculty of Health Sciences, is seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Anatomical Sciences to a full time, permanent position within the Division of Clinical Anatomy and Biological Anthropology. The Division is engaged in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in clinical anatomy, biological and forensic anthropology, and medical education research. The Department has well-equipped laboratories, hosts several postdoctoral research fellows, and has an enthusiastic and diverse postgraduate student community. The successful candidate will be required to teach human anatomy, conduct research, participate in social responsiveness activities and contribute to leadership and management of the Division and Department.

 

Requirements:

At Lecturer level:

  • A Masters degree in Anatomical Sciences AND an appropriate clinical degree (e.g., MBChB, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, or similar).
  • Registered/Registrable with the HPCSA
  • Ability to teach anatomy in a dissection hall using formalin fixed cadaveric remains
  • 2 years of experience in teaching human anatomy to undergraduate/postgraduate students.
  • A developing track record in research outputs.

At Senior Lecturer level:

  • A PhD in Anatomical Sciences AND an appropriate clinical degree (e.g., MBChB, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, or similar).
  • Registered/Registrable with the HPCSA
  • 5 years of experience in teaching human anatomy to undergraduate and/or postgraduate students.
  • Active engagement in research with evidence of a publication record in peer-reviewed academic journals (eg. 10 peer-reviewed publications over the last 5 years)
  • Ability to teach anatomy in a dissection hall using formalin fixed cadaveric remains
  • Evidence of curriculum development and review
  • Track record in the supervision of graduated students.

Responsibilities include:

 

Teaching

  • Design and deliver lectures, tutorials, practical sessions and assessments in human anatomy to Science, MBChB, Health and Rehabilitation Science (H&RS) undergraduate and/or BMedSc(Hons) students and other post-graduate students.
  • Provide academic input into the Extended degree/ Augmented academic support Programme for MBChB and H&RS students.
  • Design and deliver practical sessions using human cadavers and anatomical specimens in dissection halls.
  • Supervise and co-supervise post-graduate students.
  • Assist in curriculum development and review.

Research

  • Conceptualise and execute research projects in research related to human anatomy or biological anthropology.
  • Develop/expand research collaborations at a national level.
  • Be a member of or lead a productive research group.
  • Mentor post-graduate students.

Leadership, management and administration

      • Perform leadership, management and administrative functions related to teaching and research responsibilities, including convening or co-convening courses, managing own funding for research.
      • Additional leadership duties as required by the Head of Division.
      • Administrative duties at Division and Departmental level.

 

Social responsiveness

      • Participate in and initiate social responsiveness activities within the Institution.
      • Actively contribute to the transformation imperatives of the University of Cape Town.
