SENIOR LECTURER / OCCUPATIONAL MEDCINE SPECIALIST

The Occupational Medicine Division in the School of Public Health is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer/Occupational Medicine specialist to participate in postgraduate teaching, supervision and research activities. This is a permanent position, and the level of the appointment will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

 

The Senior Lecturer will teach on the Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Health and the Master’s (MMed) in Occupational Medicine programme, supervise Masters students, participate in research activities within the Division and contribute to the life and work of the Division more generally.

 

Requirements:

 

  • An MB ChB or equivalent.
  • Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Occupational Medicine.
  • Three years’ experience working in the occupational health and related field.
  • Experience in health sciences teaching and assessment.
  • Co-ordination and administrative skills to run an academic programme.
  • Research experience in occupational health.

  • Qualification in a cognate discipline (eg. Public Health Medicine, Family Medicine)
  • Experience in managing or delivering occupational health services and other clinical services
  • Mentorship and adult education (e.g. group work, applied learning) skills
  • Strong coordination, project management and organisational skills
  • Scholarship as evidenced in research publications and technical reports
  • A record of presenting at national or international conferences
  • Proficient in two or more languages commonly spoken in South Africa/Western Cape

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Convene the current Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Health programme and contribute to ongoing updating and development of the course.
  • Participate in the School’s Postgraduate Education Committee.
  • Represent the School in faculty committees dealing with postgraduate Diplomas.
  • Provision of support to undergraduate teaching activities.
  • Contribute to teaching reviews and design of teaching programmes within the School.
  • Conduct occupational health research in one or more related health fields.
  • Postgraduate student supervision.
  • Performance management of certain staff and appropriate budgetary oversight for teaching and research.
  • Engagement and collaboration with national stakeholders in occupational health.

The appointment will be on the UCT Academic Clinical Conditions of Service. The annual cost of employment, including benefits, will be based on the University’s clinical academic pay line, which is aligned with OSD rates.
