LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER

(Full-time, 30-month contract)

Department of Environmental and Geographical Science

FACULTY OF SCIENCE

The Department of Environmental and Geographical Science (EGS) at the University of Cape Town seeks to appoint an Environmental Geographer / Environmental Scientist at the level of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in the field of climate and impacts modeling within the broader field of climate risk management for a period of 30 months.  The successful candidate would be expected to teach and convene courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level covering topics such as climate physics, climate modeling and impact modeling.  Additionally, the successful candidate would contribute to developing the curriculum to include emerging areas such as AI/ML modelling, forecasting and big data, and cloud computing.

The EGS department has strength in engaged scholarship, interdisciplinarity, and an existing focus on earth systems sciences including biogeography, climatology and geomorphology. The department also hosts the Climate System Analysis Group (CSAG), a UCT research centre with a focus on societally engaged climate science but with expertise ranging across climate modeling, hydrology, renewable energy as well as elements of social science such as climate risk governance and risk perceptions.  As such this position aligns very closely with many of CSAGs research themes.  While CSAG is primarily a research centre, CSAG staff contribute to teaching and postgraduate supervision within EGS.  It is anticipated that this position will engage extensively with CSAG staff and activities and that productive research, teaching, and postgraduate student supervision collaborations with CSAG will be developed.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, supervise postgraduate research and sustain their own research and publication focus while also taking up administrative portfolios in the department.
