The School of Architecture Planning and Geomatics (APG) is situated in the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment at the University of Cape Town. APG is committed to spatial justice in post-apartheid South Africa. Through our teaching, research, and interactions, we aim to advance APG as an established space for critical thought and strive to create relevant societal, economic, and environmental positions. We are dedicated to developing outstanding graduates and scholars who can make a progressive contribution through their work.

 

APG offers undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in architecture that are aligned to the professional registration categories of the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP). We seek to appoint a full-time academic staff member within the architectural programme at Senior Lecturer level. We seek someone who can contribute effectively through diverse research methods and thoughtful teaching approaches.

 

The successful applicant will be expected to participate actively in the intellectual life of APG. Full-time members of staff are required to carry a full teaching load that includes studio as well as coursework teaching, to produce research outcomes, to engage in socially responsive activities, and to contribute to management and leadership at Senior Lecturer level.

 

Requirements for senior lecturer level:

  • A professional qualification in Architecture (a Masters' degree in Architecture, 5-year Bachelors’ degree in Architecture or equivalent)
  • A completed PhD or registration for a PhD degree (with the research proposal attached to the application)
  • A record of recent independent and original contributions to scholarship and/or design either through peer - reviewed publication and/or creative works
  • Evidence of social responsiveness related to the profession (see https://www.uct.ac.za/social-responsiveness)
  • At least five years proven studio-based teaching at the undergraduate and/or postgraduate level
  • Studio and course convenorship experience.

 

Applicants should describe their strengths in terms of the architectural knowledge focus that they best see themselves contributing to. They should explain their pedagogical position and approach to teaching in architecture in relation to studio and coursework respectively. Applicants should demonstrate evidence of engagement with, and commitment to, architecture, design research, architectural education, and social responsiveness activities in relation to the global South. This explanation should be included in the Statement of Interest.

 

The annual cost of employment, inclusive of all benefits, is R1 147 460 for Senior Lecturer. This is a permanent appointment, subject to a successfull three-year probation.
