The Research Office at the University of Cape Town (UCT) is seeking to appoint a self-motivated, suitably experienced and qualified candidate to the post of Senior Data Analyst. The incumbent will be responsible for leading and executing research data analysis initiatives, providing valuable insights and actionable recommendations to support informed decision-making impacting the research enterprise at UCT. This specialist role further entails navigating complex data sets, applying advanced analytical techniques, and fostering collaboration with diverse stakeholders to address evolving business needs and challenges within a dynamic environment. This post contributes to driving research internationalisation and bolstering the high impact and visibility of UCT’s research.
Requirements for the job include:
- Master’s degree in a relevant field with a quantitative bias.
- Minimum 7 years relevant experience in research data analytics, reporting and data visualisation.
- In-depth knowledge of the higher education research sector.
- Proficiency in statistical data analysis tools (e.g. Python, R, Excel, SQL).
- Familiarity with business intelligence tools (e.g. SAP Business Objects, Business Intelligence Suite, Microsoft PowerBI, Tableau).
- Solid understanding of statistical concepts and data modeling techniques.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to collect, organise, analyse and disseminate significant amounts of data and information with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex data in a clear and understandable manner.
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and maintain effective work relationships.
- Ability to work independently, exercise good judgement and discretion, and manage multiple priorities accordingly to meet deadlines
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with staff through to Executive levels.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in data analysis and reporting.

Responsibilities include:
- Strategic support and reporting: taking responsibility for the provision of strategic data and research information that will support UCT’s research enterprise, including its impact, internationalisation and visibility.
- Research-related data collection, analysis, interpretation and reporting: performing the required analyses and producing reports, insights and recommendations that have a direct effect on institutional research strategy and operations.
- Internal and external relations and communication: collaborating with stakeholders to understand business needs, prioritising research information requirements, and fostering relationships with relevant departments.
- Driving continuous improvement: staying updated on data analysis advancements, enhancing processes, collaborating in national/international data reporting, and improving UCT's electronic research administration (eRA) system and reporting capabilities.
- Human resource management: including team leadership, staff management and mentoring.
The annual cost of employment, including benefits, is between R 1 015 197 and R 1 194 348.
