The Department of Psychology at the University of Cape Town is seeking to employ a Technical Officer for a full-time permanent post, starting as soon as possible.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Honours degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Psychology, or cognate discipline.
  • 3 years’ experience working in a relevant field, with technical and programming responsibilities.
  • Excellent knowledge of computer programming environments such as Python, Java, MATLAB, R.
  • Excellent data management skills.

 

THE FOLLOWING WOULD BE ADVANTAGEOUS:

 

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Psychology, or cognate discipline
  • Experience working with programs such as E-Prime, SPSS
  • Experience with imaging software supporting MRI/fMRI work.
  • Excellent computer network skills (e.g. ability to link multiple computers with coordinated timing in experiments)
  • Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams on research projects
  • Evidence of an interest in psychology (e.g., previous work in the field, completion of psychology-related university courses, etc.)
  • Excellent administrative and interpersonal skills

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Manage, service, and provide student and staff support with respect to the specialised research equipment located in the Department of Psychology (e.g., virtual reality systems and a range of equipment for the measurement of psychophysiological data including heart rate variables, skin conductance, electroencephalography and pupillometry, using devices such as the VU-Ambulatory Monitoring System, BIOPAC MP150 and 160 data acquisition and analysis systems, polysomnography, and TOBII eye-tracker
  • Program experiments, aid in the programming of experiments, create experimental and statistical scripts, and program advanced questionnaires related to virtual reality, psychophysiological measurement, and cognitive experiments using E-prime, Python, Java, MATLAB, and Qualtrics
  • Manage and care for computer systems and networks in the ACSENT lab, The Hub, and Psychology Postgraduate laboratories.
  • Create and manage databases and manage the access and storage of data sets generated by the Department’s students and staff
  • Source quotes for electronic and technological equipment to be purchased by the Department; manage the budget assigned to the lab
  • Source and assist in appointment of junior laboratory manager; assist with student and staff supervision in research
  • Work together with a junior laboratory manager to ensure laboratory equipment is properly cared for, stored, used and maintained

 

The annual cost of employment for 2024 including benefits is between R 612,  625 and R 720,  734
