The Department of Student Affairs, through its Student Wellness Service (SWS) at UCT, is seeking a qualified and devoted person for the post of permanent psychologist for appointment as soon as possible. The post reports to the Principal Psychologist, Student Wellness Services and is located within one of the campuses of UCT in a Faculty (e.g. Health Sciences Faculty, Science, Law and Commerce).
As a successful candidate you will provide psychological services, i.e. assess, intervene, and manage students’ diverse psychological concerns. The functions include brief assessment consultations, psychotherapy, psychoeducation and supporting mental health promotion drives.
The incumbent will also be responsible for delivering short-term clinical and psychoeducational interventions within a student-centered, multidisciplinary, primary mental health care service as a division within the Student Wellness Service. The psychologist is required to work in accordance with the regulations of the professional Board of Psychology and Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), as well as to promote the institutional and departmental mission and values within the Division and the SWS.
Requirements:
- Relevant NQF Level 9 Masters Qualification
- Current registration with the HPCSA as a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist
- Two years of experience as a practicing psychologist.
- Good interpersonal skills and work ethic
- Personal accountability and commitment to the students as clients.
- Strong interest in, and an empathic attitude to working with students.
- Flexibility and adaptability to a variety of presenting problems
- Must be able to work within a multidisciplinary team.
- Must be able to cope with working under pressure in a context that is demanding.
- Skills and sensitivity to engage students on matters of mental health in forums and similar settings.
Advantageous:
- Counselling/therapeutic experience in a Higher Education environment
- Fluency in one or more indigenous languages
Responsibilities:
- Participate effectively in a responsive service that is student-centered, transformative, and aligned to a Primary Health Care orientation and philosophy in the delivery of mental health services.
- Providing solutions and innovation in the provision of mental health services through the Student Wellness Service (SWS)
- Manage time accordingly and produce quality work as per the professional board’s regulations.
- Planning, coordinating, and participating in mental health promotion activities of the team as delegated.
- Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of students presenting with psychological, psychosocial and/or psychiatric problems as guided by the professional board’s scope of practice.
- Referring to other members of the multidisciplinary team as and when a need arises
- Participating in policy work and other activities aimed at the development and promotion of mental health of the UCT student community.
- Promoting mental health/psychosocial education, awareness, and related life-skills programs in line with Student Wellness Service (SWS) objectives
- Facilitating admission where necessary; in case of mental health/psychiatric emergencies at SWS, to an appropriate hospital / health service facility
- Co-ordinating and/or participating in various portfolios or projects that are set up in the SWS.
- Assisting other colleagues when needed and displaying good, sound teamwork skills.

The annual cost of employment, including benefits, is between R 784 833 and R 923 330.
