The Computational Biology Division (CBIO) within the Department of Integrative Biomedical Sciences, leads the Bioinformatics activities at the University of Cape Town. CBIO leads several collaborative bioinformatics projects, including an African Genomics Data Hub and an African Open Data Science Platform. A new project is being established to sequence thousands of genomes, which will generate a large dataset. The project has multiple stakeholders with differing needs. We are seeking a Program Manager to manage the activities of the project, which include engagement with relevant stakeholders, coordinating the deliverables and delivering the dataset and collaborative genomics projects. Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a 2½-year, fixed term contract position of a Program Manager (Bioinformatics and Genomics), for appointment as soon as possible.  The position will be situated in the Computational Biology Division, which is in the Institute of Infectious Disease & Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Cape Town. There may be an opportunity for renewal, subject to the availability of funding.

 

Requirements:

  • Masters degree in Bioinformatics, Genomics or a related scientific domain or Postgraduate qualification in project management with evidence of exposure to Bioinformatics and/or Genomics
  • 3 years of working experience in the bioinformatics/genomics field with demonstrated project management experience or 3 years working experience in project management with demonstrated exposure to bioinformatics/genomics
  • Evidence of organizational, administrative and time management skills
  • MS Office Suite, G-suite applications (especially Word and Excel, google sheets, google docs, forms)
  • Experience with stakeholder engagement and fostering collaboration
  • Good communication and written skills

 

Advantageous:

  • Knowledge of data models and experience in data harmonization
  • Knowledge of updating websites, creating online forms, use of social networking platforms

 

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the project activities, monitor deliverables and compile reports
  • Convene and coordinate regular project and stakeholder meetings
  • Manage the development of the analysis pipelines and computational infrastructure
  • Coordinate phenotype data harmonization
  • Manage the environment, policies and agreements for data access
  • Coordinate collaborative research projects
  • Manage the web site, social media and communications
  • Disseminate project outputs through presentations and publications

The annual cost of employment for 2024, including benefits, is between R751 755 and R884 415.
