Position Title: Professor/ Associate Professor/ Senior Lecturer: Department of Commercial Law (Law)
PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / SENIOR LECTURER
DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCIAL LAW
FACULTY OF LAW
We invite applications for vacant posts in the Department of Commercial Law, within the Faculty of Law, at the level of Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer for appointment as soon as possible.
The Department intends to strengthen research and teaching across several areas of the commercial law curriculum, including, but not limited to, the field of Corporate Law, Corporate Finance Law, Competition Law and Shipping Law, and would welcome applications from candidates with an interest in these areas.
We wish to appoint applicants who are academic leaders, or have the potential to be academic leaders, to be part of the Law Faculty, which values a critical and comparative approach to the study of the law.
Requirements:
For Senior Lecturer:
- A doctoral degree or equivalent level of scholarship in a relevant field of Commercial Law;
- Lecturing experience in a relevant field of Commercial Law;
- Some record of postgraduate supervision;
- Record of publications in a relevant field of Commercial Law;
- Some evidence of academic administration; and
- Some record of socially responsive activities, public or professional service.
Responsibilities for Senior Lecturer include:
- Teaching relevant field of Commercial Law courses offered by the Department of Commercial Law as required by the Department, including service courses in Commercial Law to non-law students.
- Supervising students, including at postgraduate level.
- Maintaining a research profile and publication output commensurate for level of appointment.
- Contributing to Faculty and Department activities and administrative responsibilities appropriate to the level of appointment.
- Maintaining social responsive activities commensurate with the level of appointment.
For Associate Professor:
- A doctoral degree or equivalent level of scholarship in a relevant field of Commercial Law;
- Lecturing experience in a relevant field of Commercial Law;
- Demonstrable capacity and experience to supervise at a postgraduate level;
- A strong and consistent record of publications in a relevant field of Commercial Law appropriate to the level of Associate Professor;
- Evidence of academic and administrative leadership; and
- Strong track record of socially responsive activities, public or professional service.
For Professor:
- A doctoral degree or equivalent level of scholarship in a relevant field of Commercial Law;
- Extensive lecturing experience in a relevant field of Commercial Law;
- An established record of postgraduate supervision;
- A strong and consistent record of publications in a relevant field of Commercial Law appropriate to the level of Professor;
- Strong academic record and administrative leadership; and
- Strong track record of socially responsive activities, public or professional service.
Responsibilities for Associate Professor / Professor include:
- Teaching in a relevant field of Commercial Law courses offered by the Department of Commercial Law as required by the Department;
- Supervising graduate and postgraduate students;
- Maintaining a research profile and publication output commensurate for level of appointment;
- Contributing to Faculty and Department activities and administration responsibilities appropriate to the level of appointment; and
- Maintaining social responsive activities commensurate with the level of appointment.
The annual remuneration packages for 2024, including benefits and scarcity allowance for the respective levels are as follows:
- Professor: R1 748 924,1
- Associate Professor: R1 433 472,7
- Senior Lecturer: R1 193 010,5
