UCT, a research-intensive university that is consistently acknowledged as one of the finest universities in Africa, is seeking to appoint a highly competent individual to the permanent position of Payroll Specialist. The incumbent will process pay runs for all staff, post payroll results to finance, ensure month end third party payments are processed including SARS submissions and HR GLs and vendors are cleared regularly while proactively identifying and addressing audit and business risks.
Requirements for the job:
- An NQF 6 level qualification in a relevant field of studies e.g. National Diploma preferably in Accounting or Finance.
- At least 5 years’ recent and relevant Payroll experience within a similar role at a specialist level.
- SAP HR and Finance experience.
- Exposure and understanding of SARS legislation and processes and legislation relevant to Payroll (e.g. BCEA, LRA, Tax Administration Act).
- Knowledge of basic accounting principles.
- Exposure to and understanding of Finance and SARS audits.
- Excellent data orientation and numeracy skills.

Responsibilities:
- Schedule and manage multiple test and live pay runs and collections during the week and month.
- Monitor errors, simulate Finance postings and bank transfers to ensure completeness and accuracy of UCT’s payrolls.
- Process third party payments accurately and timeously to avoid penalties.
- Run monthly payroll checker reports, escalate errors to the HR Admin Manager and highlight risks with HR Business Risk and Payroll Manager.
- Prepare reports as requested by Finance, internal and external auditors, as well as the Benefits and HR Administration team.
- Advise or highlight master data issues that may result in risk to the business or require additional SAP training and recommend corrective actions.
- Full accountability for ensuring that General Ledger accounts, Vendors and customer accounts are cleared before the financial year-end.
- Accountable for SARS processes including but not limited to the monthly EMP201, bi-annual EMP501, AA88 deductions, IRP5 amendments and tax queries from staff.
- Test all SAP system changes as required.
- Develop and maintain effective and professional working relationships and partnerships with a range of clients marketing a responsive, customer-focused service and performance-driven culture
The annual cost of employment, including benefits will be R612 625 and R720 734 depending on qualifications and experience.
