The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cape Town seeks to appoint to its academic staff, at the level of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer, a terrestrial plant ecologist or terrestrial plant ecophysiologist. The appointee must be able to teach plant ecology and ecophysiology at the undergraduate level and must be able to supervise postgraduate student projects. The appointee will be expected to attract funding and conduct research with emphasis on southern African ecosystems.

 

Requirements for the job at Lecturer Level:

  • A PhD in Plant Biology.
  • At least 2 years post PhD research experience.
  • Expertise in plant ecology or plant ecophysiology
  • A track record of relevant research outputs

 

Additional requirements for the job at Senior Lecturer Level:

  • Evidence of teaching experience at undergraduate level
  • Evidence of course content development at undergraduate level.
  • Evidence of successful supervision of postgraduate students at Masters or PhD level.
  • A sustained track record of independent research outputs in high impact journals in plant ecology or ecophysiology.
  • Evidence of successful research grant applications.
  • Evidence of active contribution to Department-level administration.

Advantageous:

  • At Lecturer level, teaching experience at undergraduate level
  • Working knowledge of the Cape Flora
  • Skills in quantitative biology

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to teaching on Biological Science courses.
  • Develop an independent research programme.
  • Supervise postgraduate students.
  • Contribute to administration at a rank-appropriate level.
  • Contribute to the well-being of the department.
