The Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders seeks to appoint a suitably qualified candidate to a full-time, 3-year contract position of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in the Speech-Language Pathology programme. The successful candidate will contribute to strengthening the Speech-Language Pathology programme and contribute to the Department through academic leadership, research, and the education of undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as providing relevant service delivery. The incumbent will also be expected to maintain their research programme, and to contribute to divisional and departmental activities.

 

Requirements for both levels

  • Registered (and in good standing) with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Speech-Language therapist or Speech-Language therapist and audiologist
  • Minimum two years of clinical experience in Speech-Language Pathology
  • Expertise/experience in one or more of the following areas of Speech-Language Pathology: school-aged population, language, literacy, speech sound disorders, voice disorders, and/or fluency
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

 

Requirements for lecturer level:

  • A masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology or related field
  • Experience in teaching or clinical supervision of Speech-Language Pathology students

Advantages for lecturer level:

  • Relevant work experience at an academic institution
  • Track record of publications

 

Requirements for senior lecturer level

  • A doctoral degree in Speech-Language Pathology or evidence of near completion
  • Experience in undergraduate teaching and postgraduate research supervision in Speech-Language Pathology
  • Experience in convening a teaching course and/or research course/program
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications over the last five years

Advantages for senior lecturer level:

  • Evidence of funding to support research program
  • Graduated masters and doctoral students

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Academic and clinical teaching of undergraduate courses in the Speech-Language Pathology programme and at a Departmental Level
  • Supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research
  • Maintain own research programme aligned with and advancing critical approaches to teaching and practice
  • Leadership, administrative and management duties at Divisional and Departmental levels
  • Contribute to socially responsive activities aligned with the University’s vision and mission

The annual cost of employment range (2026) for this 3-year contract position, including benefits: 

 

  • At Lecturer level: is between R728 042 and R974 126

 

  • At Senior Lecturer level: is between R837 520 and R1 207 358
