The Department of Chemistry within the Faculty of Science at the University of Cape Town seeks to fill a permanent academic position in Organic chemistry at the level of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer. The Department has active research groups with strengths in catalysis, bioinorganic, biophysical and bioanalytical chemistry, synthetic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, supramolecular chemistry, scientific computing and chemical biology. Programmes are devoted to fundamental and applied chemical research, and to interdisciplinary studies in which chemistry plays a key role. Our mission is to pursue cutting edge research and deliver leading edge training and tuition to postgraduate and undergraduate students in chemistry.
Requirements for this position include:
For appointment at Lecturer level:
- A PhD in the field of organic chemistry, chemical biology or synthetic medicinal chemistry, or related field, followed by at least 2 years of postdoctoral experience in a research environment.
- A research track record that demonstrates experience and productivity in the field.
Advantageous at Lecturer level:
- Success in securing external research funding.
- Some university level teaching experience in organic chemistry.
- Some post graduate supervision experience.
For appointment at Senior Lecturer Level:
- A PhD in the field of organic chemistry, chemical biology or medicinal chemistry or related field, followed by at least 2 years of postdoctoral experience in a research environment.
- Experience in teaching organic chemistry at undergraduate level and an ability to contribute to course development.
- Supervision of postgraduate students at Honours, Masters and/or PhD level;
- A research track record that demonstrates experience and productivity in the field (publication in peer reviewed journals as senior author)
- Success in securing external research funding.
- Contributions to administration management and leadership.
Advantageous at Senior Lecturer level:
- Evidence of Social responsiveness and Engaged Scholarship.
- Evidence of international networks.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop a strong research programme, in synthetic organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry or chemical biology.
- Develop and teach courses at an appropriate level, in the sub-discipline of organic chemistry at both introductory and senior undergraduate level (including service courses) and deliver specialist lectures at the Honours (4th year) level.
- Supervise Honours, MSc and PhD, students, as appropriate.
- Contribute to the administration of the Department at an appropriate level, and Faculty of Science through committee work.
The annual remuneration package for 2024, including benefits, is
R901 517 for a Lecturer and
R1 084 555 for a Senior Lecturer.
