LECTURER in MEDIA STUDIES

(FIVE-YEAR CONTRACT)

FACULTY OF HUMANITIES

 

The Centre for Film and Media Studies (CFMS) in the Faculty of Humanities wishes to appoint a suitable candidate at the level of Lecturer to help develop the Centre’s teaching, production and research in digital and social media studies, as soon as possible. This position is a full-time, five-year contract.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • An MA in Media Studies, Film or Journalism with an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in multimedia journalism/production.  
  • Experience in teaching multimedia production skills in at least two of the following areas at tertiary level:

(i) photography, (ii) podcasting, (iii) videography and post-production.

  • Experience in teaching large classes.
  • Experience in visual design & web publishing.

 

 

THE FOLLOWING WILL BE ADVANTAGEOUS:

 

  • Experience in supervising creative and research projects.
  • Industry experience in multimedia journalism or digital and social media production.
  • A record of creative practice in the field of digital media.
  • PhD or progress towards a PhD in Media Studies.
  • The ability to develop the Centre’s digital media curriculum and convene academic and creative courses in this area.
  • Active research interests in areas such as data journalism and data visualisation, advertising & branding, digital media studies, internet studies, virtual reality, Gen AI, gaming, ethics and regulation or social media as evidenced by conference attendance and/or publications and/or creative output.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Be responsible for supporting digital and social media training in undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
  • Lecture on digital and social media in the Media and/or Film majors.
  • Convene and administer production and academic courses.
  • Supervise student projects and dissertations.
  • Contribute to research and/or creative outputs in the Centre.
  • Participate in departmental and faculty administrative processes.
  • Contribute to socially responsive initiatives.

 

 

The annual cost of employment for 2025 including benefits is R 941 184
