The School of Education at the University of Cape Town invites applications for the post of Lecturer in Education Policy, Leadership and Change.

 

The mission of the School of Education (SoE) is to undertake scholarly work that protects the principle of quality education as a public good. The mission statement is operationalised within integrated multi-level academic programmes that serve the schooling sector and all dimensions of the post-schooling sector including the non-formal education space and is conceptualised and theorised across a number of different academic streams.

 

The advertised post lies within the education policy stream that is embedded within a particular conceptual and theoretical framework with bodies of knowledge that include and engage with the globalisation of education, education policy change, education leadership and management debates, history and sociology of education, key policy and intellectual challenges tied to the preparation of teachers, and theorisations and engagement with education development concerns across all spheres of the South African education sector. 

 

The successful candidate will be required to teach, supervise, and conduct research within the above bodies of knowledge, anchored in macro and micro-explorations of education. The successful candidate will also need to show interest in working on educational research projects linked to provincial, national, and international education initiatives, with particular attention to working with African and designated international partners over the next five years.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION

  • Teach on the PGCE programme in the fields of the sociology of education, and teachers as social change agents
  • Teach on the Bachelor of Education (BEd) Honours programme in the areas of educational management and leadership and the history and sociology of education
  • Teach on the Master of Education (MEd) programme in the fields of education and globalisation, education as a public good, and educational management and leadership
  • Supervise postgraduate students at BEd Honours and Masters level, with the expectation of supervision of PhD candidates in 2-3 years
  • Conduct teaching practice supervision/evaluation of PGCE students in designated schools
  • Co-ordinate and manage provincial and national teacher professional development programmes alongside colleagues in the Education Policy stream
  • Engage in research within the field of the programme, and publish research in the field
  • Contribute to administration in the department, faculty and university
  • Participate in social responsibility activities that contribute to the field of quality and equity in education

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION

  • PGCE/BEd/HDE or firm postgraduate educational background
  • PhD (or submitted for examination PhD) in cognate areas of sociology and history of education, education policy, sociology, and development studies or political economy of education
  • Some understanding of school and post-school educational project leadership and management experience
  • A background in teaching at school and university postgraduate levels

 

THE FOLLOWING WOULD BE ADVANTAGEOUS

  • Some previous supervision of BEd Honours and MEd research projects
  • Some record of research-based peer-reviewed publications, appropriate to the rank of lecturer
  • Evidence of ability to work as a member of a bigger team, as well as to work independently
  • The ability to develop short courses for Continued Professional Teacher Development (CPTD)
  • Some level of provincial and national standing, appropriate to the rank of lecturer, tied to provincial, national and international education policy reforms and education policy thinking

 

 

The annual cost of employment for 2024 including benefits is R 901 517
