As one of the largest and most diversified tertiary music institutions in South Africa, the South African College of Music pursues a wide range of musical activities. Besides ethnomusicology, music technology and music education, there is a strong practical tradition in the fields of African and world music, as well as very active departments in jazz, western classical performance, musicology, composition, and a flourishing opera school. We are seeking to appoint two lecturers in teaching-rich African music performance positions from 1 July 2025 or soon thereafter. Two posts are available, one focused on teaching African string instruments and the second will focus on teaching xylophones and lamellophones .
The applicant should have a track record of performing and teaching a variety of African music instruments and the ability to direct large-scale musico-theatrical performances. The successful applicant will form part of a team of ethnomusicologists and African music practitioners dedicated to the teaching of all aspects of the theory and practice of African and world music at undergraduate level and the supervision of postgraduate work.
REQUIREMENTS FOR LECTURER: WITH FOCUS ON AFRICAN STRING INSTRUMENTS
- Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) or Master of Music (MMus) in African music or imminent completion thereof.
- Proficiency in African instruments with a focus on string instruments
- An emerging record of creative outputs, public performances and community engagement.
- A track record of excellence in teaching of African music instruments and ensembles.
REQUIREMENTS FOR LECTURER: WITH FOCUS ON XYLOPHONES AND LAMELLOPHONES
- Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) or Master of Music (MMus) in African music or imminent completion thereof.
- Proficiency in African instruments with a focus on xylophones and lamellophones
- An emerging record of creative outputs, public performances and community engagement.
- A track record of excellence in teaching of African music instruments and ensembles.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teaching of undergraduate and Postgraduate African music performance.
- Teaching and directing undergraduate practical ensembles and production management for public performance.
- Postgraduate supervision of creative projects.
- Administrative duties.
The 2024 annual cost of employment, including benefits at 50% Lecturer Level is R450 758
