LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER (TEACHING ONLY POSITION)

We invite applications to fill a permanent position at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level on academic teaching conditions of service. The position does not require the successful applicant to conduct research but entails a heavier teaching load.

 

The Department of Statistical Sciences at the University of Cape Town is responsible for lecturing and research in the disciplines variously known as Statistics, Operations Research, Quantitative Methods, Data Science, Machine Learning, Decision Science and Analytics, and includes the application of the Statistical Sciences in all areas of human endeavour. The department offers qualifications in these disciplines at undergraduate and postgraduate level to students from Science and Commerce, and service courses to other faculties. The department has a strong record of broad interdisciplinary work in its teaching and research.

 

For this position, we are interested in candidates who can teach in the statistical sciences and supervise postgraduate students. Interest and experience in blended learning approaches to teaching of statistics would be an advantage.

 

Requirements for the job:

 

For Lecturer on academic teaching conditions of service

  • At least a Master’s degree in Statistics, Operations Research or a closely related field.
  • Minimum two years’ experience in in-person teaching at undergraduate and possibly at honours level.
  • Ability and interest to supervise projects at honours level.

 

For Senior Lecturer on academic teaching conditions of service

  • At least a Master’s degree in Statistics, Operations Research or a closely related field.
  • Minimum three years’ experience in in-person teaching at undergraduate and possibly at honours level.
  • Experience in development of blended learning approaches to teaching or other innovative teaching approaches.
  • Experience in supervising projects at honours level.

 

Advantageous:

  • Demonstrated ability to translate innovative teaching into published research would be an advantage for both levels.

 

Responsibilities include: 

 

  • Teaching and developing undergraduate as well as honours courses in the department.
  • Convening large undergraduate classes.
  • Supervising honours students.
  • Developing new approaches to teaching, including blended learning and online approaches.
  • Investigating novel teaching approaches and student performance.
  • Departmental and faculty administrative duties.

 

The annual remuneration packages for 2026, including benefits, are:

 

Lecturer = R 1 022 832.30

Senior Lecturer = R 1 267 725.90
