The School of Architecture, Planning and Geomatics (APG) at UCT is committed to socially-just and transformative spatial outcomes. The School is seeking to appoint a full-time academic member of staff at either the Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level who can dedicate the time required to assist us in steering and supporting the rich, diverse culture of the School. In particular, we are seeking someone with professional and pedagogical experience, in addition to someone who is committed to the role that planning praxis and research offers in critically redressing colonial and apartheid injustices.

 

The Bachelor of City Planning Honours (BCP Hon) and the Masters of City and Regional Planning (MCRP) programmes are grounded in socio-economic, spatial, and environmental justice. The applicant should demonstrate evidence of an engagement with, and a commitment to, planning in the global South. They should also be willing to assist us in building intersectional methodologies and alternative pedagogies of knowledge production.

 

The successful candidate will form part of a team of four full-time academic staff dedicated to the Planning Programmes in the School. The applicant will be expected to facilitate studio-based teaching at the metropolitan scale which should include aspects of governmental systems, public policy, and GIS. Applicants should be familiar with a problem-based learning approach to planning education and be able to teach theory courses such as urban infrastructure, integrated development planning, planning law, and statistical research methods. They will also be required to supervise Masters dissertations in the planning field.

 

Requirements for both levels:

    • A Master’s degree in city/urban and regional planning
    • Demonstrable skills in spatial planning and studio based teaching, as evidenced by representative work submitted. Evidence submitted could be in the form of work in practice and/or in teaching.
    • Evidence of social responsiveness and/or contributions to professional service
    • Qualified to register as a Professional or Chartered Planner with SACPLAN or the RTPI

 

     Additional requirements for Lecturer Level:

    • At least seven years of relevant post qualification experience, either in practice or in academia, or both
    • Teaching experience at a postgraduate level, including studio-based teaching, and evidence of Masters dissertation supervision
    • The establishment of a research plan (which might include being registered for a PhD)

 

    Additional requirements for Senior Lecturer Level

    • At least ten years of relevant post qualification experience, either in practice or in academia, or both
    • A PhD in a planning related field, or significant progress towards completing a PhD in the related field
    • A demonstrable research track record (including publications in high impact, peer-reviewed journals)
    • Substantial postgraduate teaching experience, including studio-based teaching, and evidence of Masters dissertation supervision
