We invite applications to fill two permanent positions at Lecturer and Senior Lecturer levels on standard academic conditions of service or academic teaching conditions of service.

 

The Department of Statistical Sciences at the University of Cape Town is responsible for lecturing and research in the disciplines variously known as Statistics, Operations Research, Quantitative Methods, Data Science, Machine Learning, Decision Science and Analytics, and includes the application of the Statistical Sciences in all areas of human endeavour. The department offers qualifications in these disciplines at undergraduate and postgraduate level to students from Science and Commerce and service courses to other faculties. The department has a strong record of broad interdisciplinary work in its teaching and research.

 

For these positions, we are interested in either (1) candidates who can teach in the statistical sciences, conduct research and supervise postgraduate students, or (2) candidates interested and experienced in blended learning approaches to teaching of statistics. We prefer candidates from the following areas: Biostatistics, Data Science, Operations Research, Machine Learning or Multivariate Statistics.

 

Requirements for the job:

For Senior Lecturer standard academic conditions of service

  • A PhD degree in Statistics, Operations Research, Data Science or a closely related field, at the time of appointment.
  • Appropriate experience in teaching in the statistical sciences at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
  • Appropriate track record of postgraduate research supervision.
  • Track record of research as shown by publications and conference presentations.
  • Experience in leadership, management and administration.

 

For Lecturer on standard academic conditions of service

  • At least a Master’s degree in Statistics, Operations Research or a closely related field, at the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated ability in teaching at undergraduate and possibly at honours level.
  • Ability and interest to supervise research projects at honours and master’s level.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research.

 

For Lecturer/Senior Lecturer on academic teaching conditions of service

  • At least a Master’s degree in Statistics, Operations Research or a closely related field.
  • Experience in teaching at undergraduate and possibly at honours level.
  • Experience in development of blended learning approaches to teaching or other innovative teaching approaches.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate innovative teaching into published research would be an advantage.
  • Ability and interest to supervise research projects at honours and master’s level.

 

Responsibilities include:

At Lecturer/Senior Lecturer level on standard academic conditions of service

  • Teaching and developing undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses in the Department.
  • Convening large undergraduate classes.
  • Developing and leading new degree curricula.
  • Supervising honours and postgraduate students.
  • Developing and pursuing an active research programme.
  • Course convening, departmental and faculty administrative duties.
  • Providing academic leadership in the Department.

At Lecturer/Senior Lecturer level on academic teaching conditions of service

  • Teaching and developing undergraduate as well as honours courses in the department.
  • Convening large undergraduate classes.
  • Supervising honours and master’s students.
  • Developing new approaches to teaching, including blended learning and online approaches.
  • Researching novel teaching approaches and student performance.
  • Course convening, departmental and faculty administrative duties.

 

The annual remuneration packages for 2024, including benefits, are:

R901 517 at Lecturer level,

R 1 084 555 at Senior Lecturer level.

 

An allowance for scarce skills may additionally be offered.
