The UCT Molecular Mycobacteriology Research Unit (MMRU) is a University Research Committee-accredited research unit that is housed within the Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM) on the Faculty of Health Sciences campus of the University of Cape Town. The MMRU currently has a vacancy for a Junior Research Fellow which we seek to fill immediately.

 

We invite applications for this 3-year, full-time T2-contract position. The successful applicant will join the research team working on Mycobacterium tuberculosis transmission and aerobiology in collaboration with the Desmond Tutu Health Foundation’s (DTHF) Aerobiology Research Centre and will be expected to provide technical and experimental mycobacteriology expertise and data analysis support. The position will be primarily based at the DTHF site in Masiphumelele, Cape Town.

 

The Junior Research Fellowship is a full-time research position that aims to afford an emerging researcher with recent postdoctoral experience an opportunity to develop an independent research profile, enhancing the successful candidate’s competitiveness for future academic research positions and funding awards.

 

Requirements for the job:

  • PhD in Molecular Mycobacteriology or related subject within the last 5 years.
  • 2 years’ postdoctoral experience in experimental mycobacteriology.
  • Experience working under Biological Safety Level (BSL)3 containment.
  • Experience in light and fluorescence microscopy techniques and image analysis.
  • Experience in molecular biology techniques and mycobacterial culture and manipulation.
  • Proficiency in R (or equivalent).
  • Excellent communication skills.

The following will be advantageous:

  • Previous experience in M. tuberculosis transmission-related research.
  • Track record of publications in international, peer-reviewed journals.
  • A demonstrated ability to work well in a multi-disciplinary setting.
  • Familiarity with REDcap.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator/Affinity Designer or equivalent.
  • Experience in (myco)bacterial flow cytometry
  • Proficiency in biostatistics.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversight of microscopy, DNA extraction and manipulation, and mycobacterial culture at the Aerobiology Research Centre (ARC).
  • Conceptualize, develop, and implement methods for the detection and identification of aerosolized M. tuberculosis.
  • Data analysis and presentation.
  • Train, supervise, and provide mentorship for postgraduate students and staff within the research group.
  • Manuscript preparation.
  • Grant writing and submission of funding applications.
  • Contribution to MMRU journal clubs, work in progress meetings, and lab management.

This is a full-time, 3-year contract position. The annual remuneration package, including benefits, is between R574 530 and R691 000 (post is funded from research funding).
