The University of Cape Town is a research-intensive university, which seeks to foster an environment to enable responsible conduct of research. The Research Office is a central research management support office. The Office of Research Integrity (ORI) is located within the Research Office.
We seek to attract an experienced, suitably qualified individual to the post of Director, Office of Research Integrity (ORI). The ideal candidate would be an experienced individual in research ethics and integrity. The ORI works collaboratively, with a wide range of stakeholders, including the Senate Ethics in Research Committee (EiRC), the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and the Senate Animal Ethics Committee (SAEC). The ideal candidate will demonstrate maturity, calmness under pressure, and the ability to provide principled, policy-driven guidance in challenging situations
Requirements:
- An NQF 9 qualification (master’s degree) or higher in relevant fields (including law and health sciences);
- At least 9 years experience and demonstrable knowledge or experience in research ethics and research integrity;
- 9 years’ appropriate senior management experience in a Higher Education, Research Agency, Research Council or other related environment;
- Awareness of current issues in responsible conduct of research, both locally and internationally;
- Demonstrable understanding of, and ability to address, the diverse needs and challenges of researchers in different disciplines at the university;
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills;
- Excellent policy formulation, analytical and problem-solving skills;
- Maturity, calmness under pressure, and the ability to provide principled, policy-driven guidance in challenging situations;
- Demonstrated experience in conflict resolution, mediation or facilitation; and
- Proven ability to make responsible, well-reasoned decisions and offer ethical guidance in high-stress environments.
Advantageous:
- Management of allegations of research misconduct;
- Knowledge of Data Governance and Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) requirements;
- Some knowledge or experience of both animal research ethics and biosafety compliance in a research context; and
- PhD in a relevant field.
Responsibilities:
- Promoting and raising awareness of responsible conduct of research at the university;
- Facilitating compliance with a broad range of research ethics and integrity standards and legal requirements; funding agency requirements; and UCT policies, systems and procedures including biosafety, GMOs, hazardous materials and laboratory safety; data management and protection in a research context;
- Rolling-out and implementing research ethics and integrity training, discussion forums, colloquia and workshops for researchers and EiRC/SAEC/ IBC members as well as faculty-level committees;
- Overseeing the implementation of systems to measure, monitor and improve research ethics and integrity services;
- Policy revision and development;
- Managing a range of external stakeholder relations e.g., regarding compliance with international funder and government agency requirements for permits, facility registration and key procedure authorization; and
- Provide effective leadership of the ORI and actively engage with RO strategic initiatives, including completing all RO management and HR administration requirements such as quarterly reporting, HR management.
The annual cost of employment for 2025, including benefits, is between R 1 329 295 and R 1 563 876.
