The Department of Chemical Engineering enjoys an international reputation and is actively committed in teaching and research. The undergraduate degree programme is Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) accredited. Research is carried out in the areas of bioprocess engineering, catalysis and catalytic processing, engineering education, environmental systems and process systems engineering, hydrometallurgy, minerals processing, precipitation and crystallisation, energy systems modelling, and sea ice. The Department enjoys strong, global industrial support for its teaching and research programmes, and maintains close links with the South African chemical, petrochemical, biotechnological and minerals industries.

 

The Department invites applications from suitably qualified persons for a 5-year fixed term contract assistant lecturer post, funded by the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA).

 

This MQA funded post is for the development of academics-of-the-future, who are contemplating or are in the early stages of an academic career. A person who has previously been employed in an MQA funded lecturer post is not eligible.

 

Requirements for the position:

•   BSc (Eng) in Chemical or Metallurgical Engineering or a closely allied scientific discipline;

•   MSc in Chemical or Metallurgical Engineering or a closely allied scientific or engineering discipline;

•   Ability to teach in the BSc (Eng) Chemical Engineering undergraduate curriculum;

•   Ability to contribute to research expertise in the Department. 

 

* Candidates who do not have a MSc but have been registered for a MSc and subsequently upgraded to a PhD, according to the rules of their educational institution, will be considered, provided there is demonstrable evidence of sufficient academic progress towards obtaining the PhD degree.

 

The following will be advantageous:

  • A PhD Degree in Chemical or Metallurgical Engineering or a closely allied scientific discipline;
  • Potential to become professionally registered with ECSA as an engineer;
  • Proven experience in teaching;
  • Experience in generating research outputs and obtaining research funding;
  • Relevant industrial experience.

 

The annual annual cost of employment for fixed term contract, including benefits, ranges between R419 861 and R599 810.
