nGAP LECTURER IN LOGIC AND THE PHILOSOPHY OF LANGUAGE

Through the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP, Phase 8), funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training, the Philosophy Department is seeking to appoint a Lecturer with a specialisation in Logic and the Philosophy of Language.

 

The nGAP (Phase 8) appointment is a full-time, permanent position that offers a promising, current PhD student a six-year academic development programme. The programme will include mentoring and other forms of career development and support to enable the successful candidate to complete their PhD and begin their career as an academic.

 

The nGAP appointment is structured as follows:

In the first three years of employment, 80% of time is allocated to research and PhD studies with the remaining 20% towards teaching and administrative duties.

In the fourth year of employment, 50% of time is allocated to research and PhD studies with the remaining 50% towards teaching and administrative duties.

In the fifth and sixth years of the programme, the appointee performs duties as per the department norms followed by continuing permanent employment thereafter.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION:

 

  • The applicant must be 40 years of age or younger.
  • A master’s degree in philosophy with a 70% pass or above.
  • Accepted onto or enrolled in a Philosophy PhD programme by the time of appointment.
  • Active research specialisation in Logic and the Philosophy of Language

 

THE FOLLOWING WILL BE ADVANTAGEOUS.

 

  • Experience teaching Logic and the Philosophy of Language to undergraduate students.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The successful candidate will be expected to complete or make considerable progress towards completion of their PhD studies (if not already in possession of a PhD) in the first three years of the nGap programme. They will be given a substantially reduced teaching load, mentorship support and research funding to do so. They will teach students at undergraduate level in Logic and the Philosophy of Language. By the completion of the nGAP programme, they should be ready to teach and supervise postgraduate students and have a developing research profile.

 

The annual remuneration package, including benefits, is R 901 517.
