ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/ PROFESSOR AND LECTURER/ SENIOR LECTURER

DEPARTMENT OF PRIVATE LAW

 

 

 

The Department of Private Law, within the Faculty of Law, invites applications for an academic appointment at the level of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor/Professor. The Department requires a person with expertise in the Law of Delict to commence employment as soon as possible.

 

The Department intends to strengthen research and teaching across several areas of its academic offerings at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Department would welcome applications from candidates with the relevant qualifications, experience, and an interest in the Law of Delict. A candidate should demonstrate the ability or potential to be an academic leader in a Faculty and Department that values a critical and comparative approach to the study of law.

 

Candidates suitable for appointment as a LECTURER must have:

  • At least a LLB and LLM degree or its equivalent (NQF 9 level qualification) with a strong academic record overall and especially in the Law of Delict.

 

Advantageous for a LECTURER position:

  • Some record of publications in Private Law (preferably in the Law of Delict);
  • Some lecturing experience in the Law of Delict or equivalent relevant experience;
  • Some record of socially responsive activities, or public or professional service; and
  • A doctoral degree (NQF 10 level qualification) in Private Law or related field or working towards completing such a doctoral degree.

 

Candidates suitable for appointment as a SENIOR LECTURER must have:

  • At least a LLB and LLM degree or its equivalent (NQF 9 level qualification) with a strong academic record overall and especially in the Law of Delict;
  • Lecturing experience in the Law of Delict or equivalent relevant work experience;
  • An established record of publications in the Law of Delict;
  • Some evidence of active contribution to Department- and Faculty-level academic administration (or equivalent experience); and
  • Some record of socially responsive activities, or public or professional service.

 

Advantageous for a SENIOR LECTURER position:

  • A doctoral degree (NQF 10 level qualification) in Private Law or related field; and
  • Some record of postgraduate supervision.

 

Candidates suitable for appointment as an ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR must have:

  • A doctoral degree (NQF 10 level qualification) or equivalent level of scholarship in Private Law (preferably in the Law of Delict);
  • Considerable lecturing experience in the Law of Delict;
  • Demonstrable capacity and experience to supervise at a postgraduate level;
  • A strong and consistent record of relevant publications in Private Law;
  • Evidence of academic and administrative leadership; and
  • A strong record of socially responsive activities.

 

 

Candidates suitable for appointment as a PROFESSOR must have:

  • A doctoral degree (NQF 10 level qualification) or equivalent level of scholarship in Private Law (preferably in the Law of Delict);
  • Extensive lecturing experience in the Law of Delict;
  • A considerable record of postgraduate supervision;
  • A strong and consistent record of publications in Private Law;
  • A strong record of academic and administrative leadership; and
  • A strong record of socially responsive activities.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the relevant fields, or as otherwise required by the Department or Faculty;
  • Supervising students, including at the postgraduate level (as appropriate to the level of appointment);
  • Maintaining a research profile and publication output commensurate with the level of appointment;
  • Contributing to and/or participating in Faculty and Departmental activities and assuming administrative responsibilities appropriate to the level of appointment; and
  • Maintaining socially responsive activities and/or public or professional service commensurate with the level of appointment.

The annual remuneration packages for 2024, including benefits and scarcity allowance for the respective levels are as follows:

 

  • Professor:                              R 1 748 924,1
  • Associate Professor:             R 1 433 472,7 
  • Senior Lecturer:                    R 1 193 010,5 
  • Lecturer:                                R 991 668,7
